Good Morning OBX Crew! Fall arrives officially Tuesday night at 8:04 PM. The ESA Easterns Surfing Championship is wrapping up at Jennette's Pier, the Big Beach Sweep cleanup runs there Saturday morning, and Saturday night brings a full Harvest Moon. Good week to be outside. Let's get into it! Fall Is the Whole PointFall is my favorite time of year anywhere, and on the OBX it isn't close. The heat finally lets go. Morning and night there's a breeze with an edge on it, cool enough that stepping outside actually wakes you up. That's the specific thing I wait for all summer, and it doesn't last forever. The water cools off too, and a lot of people read that as the signal to stop going to the beach. I think that's backwards. Go anyway. The sand is still there, the wind is better than it is in July, and the mist coming off the ocean on a cool morning is worth the walk by itself. You'll have most of it to yourself, which is the other half of the argument. Tuesday at 8:04pm the equinox makes it official. Not that the OBX needed the paperwork. Restaurant Spotlight Chicamacomico Life-Saving StationRodanthe Built in 1874, this was the first life-saving station in North Carolina, and it's now the largest and most complete U.S. Life-Saving Service complex left in the country. All of the original buildings are still standing, which almost no other site can claim, and it's the only USLSS site in the state open to the public as a museum. Open weekdays 10 to 5, with Saturday hours some weeks, so check before you drive down. They also run the beach rescue drill reenactment in season, which is the thing to time a visit around. Read the history piece further down before you go. The place hits differently once you know why it's there. Plan a Visit |

The Autumn Nobody CameFall out here has always meant storms as much as it means good weather, and there's a piece of OBX history that comes straight out of that. Just after 1am on November 24, 1877, the USS Huron ran aground in a wind storm off Nags Head. Ninety-eight of the 134 men aboard died. The nearest life-saving station was about two miles up the beach, and nobody came, because nobody was there. Congress had only funded the U.S. Life-Saving Service to staff its stations seasonally, and that year they weren't set to open until December 1. The Huron wrecked a week early. Two months later the steamer Metropolis went down off Currituck Beach, halfway between two stations. Eighty-five more people died. Two wrecks in one winter, and the reaction from everyone was loud enough that Congress finally paid for more stations and longer seasons on this coast. That's the reason the stations exist in the form they do, and it's why I put Chicamacomico up top this week. You can walk through the result and see a piece of history. Contribute to the OBXFrom OBX is 100% free, independently owned, and it's just me running it. If you've gotten value from it, your support helps me keep it going.
