Good Morning OBX Crew! This is the weekend the fall calendar breaks open. Day at the Docks runs in Hatteras Village Friday and Saturday, Oktoberfest takes over the Outer Banks Brewing Station, the Autumn Ale Faire is at the Elizabethan Gardens, and the ESA Easterns Surfing Championship starts at Jennette's Pier on Sunday. Plenty going on. Let's get into it! The DeckWe have a deck, and I have spent a lot of hours on it doing absolutely nothing. Spring and fall are the best of it. I'll get out there at sunrise, and again at sunset, and just sit. No phone, no list. You can hear everything from up there, the birds, the wind moving through, somebody's screen door a few houses down. The weather in those two seasons is close to perfect for it. Here's the part I think about more than I expected to. The OBX is the only place where I actually stop. Not stop working in the sense of taking a day off, but genuinely reset. My head quiets down out there in a way it doesn't anywhere else, and I've never fully been able to explain why. Maybe it's just that the deck gives you nothing else to do. In any case, I can't wait for the reset. Restaurant Spotlight Cafe PamlicoInn on Pamlico Sound, Buxton Since I just spent some time talking about sitting on a deck at sunset, here's the place to do it if you don't have one. Cafe Pamlico is the restaurant at the Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton, and it's soundfront, which means the sunset is happening directly in front of you rather than behind the house across the street. The covered deck overlooks the water and they run live music out there. People consistently call it the best dinner on Hatteras Island, and the lobster bisque comes up over and over in reviews. It's open year round, dinner service tightens up in the offseason, so call ahead. Get a deck table and go early enough for the light. Book a Table |
