Good Morning OBX Crew! Big week. The Outer Banks Seafood Festival takes over Nags Head on Saturday, Wings Over Water runs Tuesday straight through Sunday, and the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival is in Manteo Thursday through the weekend. Duck does Trunk-or-Treat Saturday afternoon if you've got kids. Let's get into it! The Best Six Miles on the OBXI want to talk about a drive, which I realize is a strange thing to get excited about. The run from Southern Shores up to Duck is my favorite stretch of road out here. You make the turn past the gas station and immediately you're in among houses that are genuinely incredible, the kind where you slow down without meaning to. Keep going and the whole thing changes. You're suddenly surrounded by trees, and not small ones. Big ones, leaning out over the road from both sides until it feels like a tunnel. I did not expect to find that on a barrier island. Then you break out of the trees and the Duck boardwalk is there with water off your left shoulder. Every single time. If you only ever drive the Bypass to get where you're going, you're missing it. Take 12 through Southern Shores instead and go slow. It's maybe six miles and it's the best six miles out here. Restaurant Spotlight Red Sky Casual Dining & Cocktails1197 Duck Road, Duck Since I just told you to drive to Duck, here's where to stop when you get there. Red Sky is chef Wes Stepp's place, the first one he opened back in 2002 after working his way up from fry cook to executive chef at Kelly's. Thirty-plus years in kitchens on this coast. The shrimp and grits is the thing people order and keep ordering, and he runs a lighter Tastefully Fit menu if that's more your speed. They also do Chefs on Call, where the team comes and cooks in your rental, which is a genuinely good idea for a big group week. Hours shift with the season, so call ahead at 252-261-8646. Did Anybody Else See This?A subscriber wrote in with something I can't resolve on my own, so I'm putting it to all of you. They were out here the week of September 11th through the 18th and one night they watched something rip across the sky. Bright, fast, gone. They didn't have a phone out, which is the way these things always go, and now they'd love to see a picture of it. So: were you out here that week, and did you see it? Better yet, did anybody get it on camera? Vote below so I know how many of you caught it, and if you have a photo or a video, hit reply and send it over. I'll get it to them and share it here. One tap casts your vote and opens the live results. |

Thanks! -Ryan, From OBX Why I'm Already Playing Christmas MusicI don't think I've said this here yet, so: November and December are my favorite months of the year. Not for the gifts. For the way everybody seems to carry a little more joy around with them. These are supposed to be the dark months, short days, not much sun. And somehow they're when I feel the best. People are warmer to each other. There's more reason to be around family. I'm already playing Christmas music and I'm not going to apologize for it. The other thing I've figured out is that I want more community in my life, not less. This newsletter has turned into some of that for me. So thank you for being here and reading along every week. It matters more than you'd think.
