Watermelon Festival, the Fig Festival, and Our Neighbor Floyd

Good Morning OBX Crew!

Big week coming. The 20th Annual Watermelon Festival takes over Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head on Thursday, Ocracoke runs its 13th Annual Fig Festival Friday and Saturday, and the 43rd Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament wraps up out of Manteo.

August is officially here.

Meet Floyd

I've lived in a lot of places, and there were stretches where I could not have told you a single neighbor's name. Not one. You wave from the driveway and that's the whole relationship.

Then my parents bought the house on the OBX and met Floyd.

Floyd was outside waiting to say hello before we'd even gotten unpacked. He's offered to take us fishing and crabbing, he keeps an eye on the property when we're not out there, and he's just genuinely glad we showed up. He has lived on the same cul de sac his entire life. He knows every tide, every neighbor, every story on that street.

That's the part about the OBX people don't put in the brochures. The beach is the beach, it's great, but Floyd is the reason it feels like home. Every trip out there is worth it because of people like him.
