Good Morning OBX Crew! The WRV Outer Banks Pro runs at Jennette's Pier from Wednesday through the weekend, which means the best surfers on the East Coast are in Nags Head and you can watch the whole thing from the sand for free. There's also a full moon early Friday morning, so expect big tides. Let's get into it! Ocracoke, UnderwaterWe took the ferry over to Ocracoke a while back and it started raining before we even landed. Nothing too crazy when we first got there, but that was only the start. We had come a long way so we didn't think too much of it and continued to the main part of the island. We drove around, saw the lighthouse, walked through the cemetery, and then it went from light rain to heavy rain to something else entirely. There was no more sightseeing to be done. The drive back to the ferry is the part I still think about. The rain was falling so fast that the wipers physically could not keep up, so the windshield was just a sheet of water with a road somewhere behind it. And the road had flooded. Close to a foot of standing water in places. We crawled the whole way, going slow enough not to push water into the engine, hoping the ferry was still running. We made it. And then, of course, the second we docked back at Hatteras, the rain stopped completely. The weather out here does whatever it wants. That trip was a disaster by any normal measure and it's still one of our stories we talk about to this day. If you plan to make it out to Ocracoke, make sure you check the weather before you go! Restaurant Spotlight Fig Tree Bakery & Sweet ToothOcracoke Village Since I just put you through my Ocracoke horror story, here's the reason to actually go. Ocracoke is known for its fig trees, and the Fig Tree Bakery keeps that going with fig cake, fig preserves, and fig pastries. The fig cake is the island staple, and you can get it by the slice, which is the right way to try it the first time. They've got a candy shop attached too, so nobody in your group leaves unhappy. If you're making the ferry trip, this is a required stop. Get a Slice |

Thanks! -Ryan, From OBX The Zillow Zone 1239A S Virginia Dare Trl, Kill Devil Hills — $575,000I look at OBX real estate constantly, mostly as a hobby, occasionally as a plan. Here's the one that caught my eye this week. It's a beach cottage on the oceanside of the Beach Road in KDH, five bedrooms, two and a half baths, and 1,560 square feet. Covered porches, outdoor shower, the whole classic setup. It needs work, which is exactly the kind of project I look for. Even with that, three lots from the water in Kill Devil Hills at $575,000 is the kind of number that makes you open a mortgage calculator at 11pm. Somebody is going to fix this place up and be very happy about it. (Just something fun I found, not an ad, and definitely not financial advice.) See the Listing |
